What Is Catch-Up on IPTV? How It Works and Why Some Channels Don't Have It

Catch-up on IPTV lets you play a show that already aired, straight from the TV guide, without having recorded it. The provider stores recent broadcasts on its servers for selected channels and your player requests that time slot. It needs three things: a channel with its archive switched on, a working EPG so the player knows what aired when, and a player that supports catch-up. On supported channels, look for the archive or rewind icon in the guide.

Catch up on IPTV means going back in the guide and playing something that already aired. This guide, part of our IPTV player guides, explains how it differs from recording, what it needs from the provider, the guide and the player, and why it works on one channel and not the next.

Catch-up vs DVR vs on-demand

Catch-up plays past broadcasts that the provider has stored; a DVR plays what you recorded yourself; on-demand is a separate library of films and series.

DVR / recordingYou, on a device or cloud spaceOnly what you set to recordKept until you delete it
On-demand (VOD)The provider's libraryFilms and series, not tied to a broadcast timeSeparate from live channels

The big advantage of catch-up is that you did not have to plan. Missed the start of a game or forgot a show? If the channel has an archive, it is waiting in the guide. The catch is that you get only what the provider kept, for as long as it keeps it. If you need a programme for good, our IPTV DVR guide covers recording options.

Catch-up also covers the case people use most and rarely name: starting a programme from the beginning when you tune in late. A show that is still on air already has its first part in the archive, so you can select it in the guide and watch from the opening minute while the rest is still being broadcast.

How catch-up works behind the guide

Catch-up works when the provider has switched on an archive for that channel and the player uses the guide's start and end times to ask the archive for that exact slot.

On the provider's side, catch-up is enabled channel by channel. For those channels the server keeps recent broadcasts. When you log in with an Xtream Codes login (server URL, username and password), the channel list your player receives can mark which channels carry an archive, which is how the player knows where to show the icon.

On your side, the electronic programme guide (EPG)supplies the schedule. When you pick a past programme, the player sends the channel, the programme's start time and its length to the archive, and the archive streams back that slice. The archive does not know show names; it only knows time. That is why a guide set to the wrong time offset plays the wrong programme, or starts halfway through.

Which players support catch-up

Most full-featured IPTV players support catch-up, including TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro and OTT Navigator, but only on channels where the provider has switched the archive on.

PlayerCatch-upWhat to check
TiviMateSupports catch-up from the TV guideArchive icon on the channel; current app version
IPTV Smarters ProSupports catch-up on channels that carry itLogin type and whether the channel shows an archive
OTT NavigatorSupports catch-up from the guideArchive settings for your playlist
Basic M3U playersOften no catch-upUse a player with guide and catch-up support

Support also depends on how you log in. An Xtream Codes login gives the player the archive information directly; with a plain M3U link, catch-up works only if the playlist carries it and the player reads it. Feature lists change between versions, so check your own app. Our TiviMate player guide covers that app in depth.

How to use catch-up in TiviMate and IPTV Smarters

Open the TV guide, find a channel that shows the archive or rewind icon, move back in time to a programme that has already ended, and choose to play it.

  1. Log in with your Xtream Codes details and let the guide finish loading.
  2. Open the TV guide view and pick a channel marked with an archive or rewind icon.
  3. Scroll left, back in time, to a programme that has finished.
  4. Select it and choose the play or watch option. Playback starts from the programme's start time.
  5. Use the player's seek controls to skip forward; return to the channel to go back to live.

The steps are much the same in both apps, though button names and icons differ between versions. If no programme in the past shows an icon, the channel has no archive.

Catch-up not working?

When catch-up plays the wrong show or nothing at all, the cause is almost always one of four things: no archive on that channel, a guide set to the wrong time, a programme older than the archive window, or a stale channel list.

  • No archive on the channel. No icon means no catch-up. Nothing on your side will add it.
  • Wrong programme or a late start. The guide offset does not match the archive. Fix the time offset as shown in our EPG troubleshooting guide.
  • Error on an older show. It has dropped out of the archive window.
  • Icons missing after a change. Refresh or reload the playlist and the guide so the player picks up the current channel list.
  • Works in one app only. The other player may not support catch-up with your login type.

Catch-up across US time zones

Yes: if a channel carries an archive, catch-up lets you start an East Coast broadcast whenever suits you on the West Coast, three hours later or the next morning.

Where a lineup carries only one feed of a channel, prime-time shows air at East Coast times wherever you live. Catch-up turns that into a choice. Two things matter: the device's time zone must be set correctly, and the guide offset must match, or the player will request the wrong hour. Check that a programme you know starts on time before you rely on it.

How long shows stay available

Catch-up plays programmes from a limited archive window that the provider sets, often per channel; once a programme is older than that window, it drops off.

The window can differ between channels on the same service, so the guide is the best guide: past programmes with an icon are playable, those without are gone. TVNado offers catch-up on supported channels, and not every channel has it. Before you pay, check your must-have channels for the archive icon during the free 24-hour TVNado trial, which needs no card. Plans start at $19.99 a month on the TVNado pricing page.

IPTV catch-up questions

Does IPTV have catch-up?

Many IPTV services offer it on some channels. It depends on the provider enabling an archive for each channel, so check the guide for the icon.

How far back does IPTV catch-up go?

As far as the provider's archive window for that channel. It varies by service and by channel, so scroll back in the guide and see where the icons stop.

Can I skip ahead in a catch-up programme?

Usually, yes, with the player's seek controls. Expect a short pause each time while the player loads the new point from the archive.

Is catch-up the same as recording?

No. Catch-up streams from the provider's archive for a limited time; a recording is a copy you control. See how to record IPTV if you need to keep a show.
