DStv Lite: Channels, Price and Which Countries Sell It

DStv Lite is an entry-level DStv package from MultiChoice, sold in some African markets rather than everywhere DStv operates; secondary sources report it in Ghana and Kenya, while South Africa's entry tiers appear under other names. DStv Lite channels lean towards news, kids, local and general entertainment rather than premium sport. Prices and lineups differ by country and change often, so confirm on your local DStv site. If you mainly want more channels for less, compare it with an internet-based option.

DStv Lite is one of the least documented DStv packages, because it is not sold in every country and its details change from market to market. This guide sits under our complete DStv guide. We are not MultiChoice, so we say where our information comes from and send you to your local DStv site for the figures that change.

What DStv Lite is and where it is sold

DStv Lite is an entry-level DStv package from MultiChoice, sold in some African markets rather than everywhere DStv operates; secondary sources report it in Ghana and Kenya.

MultiChoice runs DStv as a family of country services, each with its own package names, prices and channels. Lite is one of those market-specific names. If you live in a country whose DStv site does not list Lite, you are not missing a hidden package; that market simply sells its cheapest tier under another name.

DStv Lite channels: what the lineup covers

DStv Lite channels lean towards news, kids, local and general entertainment rather than premium sport, and the exact lineup is set separately in each market that sells the package.

Because the package is built market by market, a Lite list from Ghana will not match one from Kenya. Neither secondary source we found confirms a channel count, so we do not print one. The way to get the real list is the channel guide on your country's DStv site or the DStv app, filtered to your package.

When you read that list, check four things:

  • Local channels. Your national and regional broadcasters are often the main reason to choose Lite.
  • News. Note which local and international news channels appear.
  • Kids and family. Entry packages usually carry some children's channels; see which ones.
  • Sport. Check whether any sport channel is included at all, and which competitions it shows. Premium sport is what the higher tiers are for.

DStv Lite price by country

DStv Lite is priced in local currency and set separately in each market, so the only reliable figure is the one on your country's DStv site on the day you check.

We have not confirmed a current Lite price on dstv.com for any market, so this page does not print one. Prices you find on blogs and payment sites may be out of date; check the date on any figure before you rely on it.

Lite vs Compact vs Premium

Moving up from DStv Lite gets you more channels at each step: Compact adds entertainment and a wider sport selection, and Premium adds the most sport and movie channels.

Can you watch DStv Lite on DStv Stream?

DStv Stream is MultiChoice's way to watch DStv over the internet without a dish, but which packages it offers differs by country, so check your local DStv site to see whether Lite is one of them.

If Lite is not offered on Stream where you live, you need the satellite setup: a dish and a decoder. If you already have both, Lite is a low-cost way to keep them in use. If you have neither, compare the cost of installation with an internet-only option before you commit.

Upgrading, downgrading and the 2026 package changes

DStv packages are changing in 2026: BusinessTech reports that Canal+, which now owns MultiChoice, is streamlining DStv packages, though the report does not settle what happens to Lite.

Until your country's DStv site shows the new lineup, treat any change as unconfirmed. Before you switch packages, check in the DStv app or with MultiChoice when the change takes effect and what you pay for the rest of the current month.

A package change usually comes down to three steps:

  1. Compare the lineup of the package you want with your current one on your country's DStv site, not a third-party list.
  2. Make the change in the DStv app or through your local MultiChoice self-service or support channel.
  3. Leave the decoder switched on afterwards so it can receive the update; if channels show an error, see the common DStv decoder fixes.

DStv Lite or an IPTV subscription?

DStv Lite is the better buy if you already own a dish and decoder and mainly want your local channels; an internet TV plan suits you better if you want a much larger lineup over broadband and have no satellite setup.

Lite tends to make sense when:

  • you already have a working dish and decoder, so there is no setup cost;
  • your viewing is mostly local news, local shows and children's channels;
  • your home internet is slow, shared or capped, which makes streaming unreliable.

Be clear about what an internet service cannot replace. Local broadcasters and local sports rights are often sold only through the national pay-TV operator, so if a specific local channel or league is why you pay, stay with DStv.

If you want volume instead, TVNado streams 55,000+ live channels over the internet to phones, smart TVs and streaming sticks, with no dish and no contract. You need steady broadband, ideally without a tight data cap. Our DStv versus IPTV comparison and our guide to an IPTV subscription in South Africa go deeper. Plans start at $19.99 a month, billed in US dollars, on the TVNado plans page, and you can test the channels you care about with the free 24-hour trial, no card needed.

Only if your country offers Lite on DStv Stream. Check the Stream packages on your local DStv site; otherwise Lite needs a dish and a decoder.

How much is DStv Lite a month?

It depends on the country and changes over time. Your local DStv site and the DStv app show the current monthly price.

What is the difference between DStv Lite and Compact?

Compact sits a step higher, with more entertainment channels and a wider sport selection, at a higher monthly price.
